Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not suitable for her. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
